I had the opportunity to attend several Fleet Week events in San Francisco this weekend. Although I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area all of my life, I had never attended this event before. It was an amazing experience, and featured many outstanding photo opportunities. I have many pictures to process that I will post over the next few weeks.

One of the interesting things about Fleet Week is all the uniformed personnel walking about to enjoy the sights, sounds, and culture of the city. I happened upon this group of cadets parading along Embarcadero. I found it humorous to watch these young men try and keep focused on their march while there was so much to look at all around them. One cadet, as you can see, just couldn’t help himself.

(Not So) Hot
Last week, I had an opportunity to shoot pictures with Mark Kitaoka and
Vernon Trent in San Diego, CA. Both Mark and Vernon are highly skilled photographers, and I was excited to go out with them one evening to the gaslamp district.

Although I had a great time, it was obvious that my equipment was not exactly up to par. As it was late at night when we were out, the lighting was so poor that I could basically only take pictures of lighted signs. Other shots were full of so much noise that the picture just didn’t turn out. Meanwhile, both Vernon and Mark were snapping away with impressive results [sigh].

Today’s image is one of two lighted sign images I took that evening. I’m posting them not because I like them all that much, but as a stubborn yet humorous reminder of the lesson I learned that evening.

Painted Ladies of San Francisco

This shot was taken at Alamo Square Park in San Francisco, CA. It’s a well-known image of the city, though I never knew where to find it until a few weeks ago.

My friend Mark and I were out shooting pictures in and around the Bay Area that day when we found ourselves in the neighborhood and Mark mentioned that it might be a good opportunity to get this shot. He had taken the shot himself a few weeks earlier just after learning of its location (you can see Mark’s image here).

Have a great weekend!
I was recently invited to join WeeklyShot.org by
Mark Kitaoka. WeeklyShot is a photo challenge site; each week, the site runs a new challenge theme. The entries are kept anonymous during the challenge and are rated by the other site participants, with the highest rated images being featured on the home page.

I took this image for the Self Portrait 2 theme on WeeklyShot. After setting up the shot on my tripod, I used my wireless remote on a two-second time delay and then quickly got into position. My wife stood behind the camera and flashed the scene as I got into each position during a long exposure. We made several attempts, and this was the best image.

I am continually amazed by the talent of the photographers on WeeklyShot, and was excited when the image was featured on the site.
